Humane Society of Hobart, Inc. |
The Humane
Society of Hobart was founded & received it's charter in 1954.
It is a not-for-profit organization under
501©
3. The
shelter has provided animal control for the City of Hobart
since 1957. We also provide housing for animals that
come from Portage and Lake Station in addition
to Merrillville and New Chicago.
We average 5,000 animals a year. We are not a "no-kill"
shelter, but have no "set time". Our adoption rate
ranges from 62% to 79% monthly.
For 20 years we have participated in the Purina Pets For
People Program, which enables senior citizens (over 60
years of age) to adopt an adult dog or cat, free of charge &
with free neutering.
Our wonderful employees consist of 8 full-time & 4 part-time.
Our employees have been with the shelter from 3 - 27 years.
The shelter consist of approximately 150 cages ... which make up a
large dog kennel, small dog & puppy kennel, cat room, puppy
isolation & cat isolation rooms. Also many rolling
cages.
We work on a budget of $220,000 ... which includes wages for
our 12 employees.
The shelter is not funded by any government entity.
Funds are raised through donations & fundraisers such as
rummage sales and Santa photos during December.
