Our Facility |
The Humane
Society of Hobart was founded and received its charter in
1954. Originally the main office fronted Route 130, but as the
number of animals received continued to grow, so the shelter
had to grow. In the mid sixties new offices and a big dog
kennel were added. The main office was then located on the
right hand side.
The Society has always received animals from all of Porter &
Lake County and has provided animal control for the City of
Hobart since 1957. In 1958 we took in 3,000 animals. This
number of animals in increased to 4,500 in 1960; 8,900 in
1964; to 12,430 in 1972. 10,000 to 12,000 a year was the norm
until the new facility was built in 1982 for Lake County
Animal Control.. By 1999, with our spay/neuter program in
effect, we were under 5,000 animals per year.
A decrease continued until Lake County Animal Control was
taken over by the sheriff of said County & he declared the
animal control a “no-kill” facility. Since then, we have seen
an increase of 2,000+ animals a year because of the Political
Climate in Lake & Porter Counties. But being a Humane Society,
and our prime concern being the welfare of animals, we have
been “forced” to accept a goodly amount of their strays. We
are not a “no-kill” shelter, but operate as one. All animals
are assessed individually at intake. If healthy & adoptable,
they remain with us until we find them a forever home.
Hobart Humane Society has participated in the Purina Senior
Adoption Program since 1988. This allows senior citizens to
adopt free or with a smaller fee than normal.
Our spay/neuter program has helped tremendously to reduce the
number of unwanted pups & kittens. We have 41 veterinarians in
the program. Some even in Illinois.
In 1999 we again did extensive remodeling. An old kennel not
used was made into two offices and a storage room, the old
office became an attractive lobby, and a smaller office a
“play room” for critters and potential adopters. This was
accomplished by a legacy from an ardent supporter, Clare
Samuelson.
We have 155 cages. Seventy are built-in, but have chain link
doors. These need frequent replacing. Also our rolling cages
frequently need replacing. Ergo our Cage Sponsoring Program.
The cage doors run approximately $75.00 each, the rolling
cages $1,600.00 each. We have plaques for $100, $200, & $300.
At the rear of the property we have a simply lovely dog-
walking park. There is a memorial patio with a seating area,
and a memorial path. Sponsor bricks are $50.00. A memorial
brick is also available if a person should wish one for their
own garden. These are ordered two times a year.
Shelter staff consists of a Director, Supervisor, Warden, Desk
Person, and 8 personnel with many interchangeable be it kennel
work, desk, or warden. All work very hard. More help is
needed, but funds not available. Therefore we work with what
we have.
